Home Health Agency Requirements

A home health agency is defined as a public agency, a private organization, or a subdivision of an agency or organization. To provide care and obtain reimbursement from Medicare, the care must be provided by a Medicare certified agency. State surveyors perform the certification process to ensure the agency is meeting all Medicare standards. Accrediting bodies, such as Joint Commission, can perform the survey for certification in some states. This route to certification is called "deemed status."

Specific requirements that home health agencies must meet are found in the Medicare General Information, Eligibility and Entitlement Manual (CMS Pub. 100-01), Ch.5 §50.External PDF
