If You Don't Have It, Get It, Then Use It!
If you don't have your patient's Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) there are 3 ways you and your office staff can get the MBI.
- Ask your Medicare patients for their new card. If they haven't received it, give them the "Get Your New Medicare Card" handout or refer them to 1.800.633.4227.
- Use the myCGS secure MBI look-up tool. Refer to the myCGS User Manual, Chapter 9: MBI Look-up Tool to learn more.
- Review your remittance advice. When you submit claims with a valid and active Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) your remittance advice will provide the patient's MBI. Refer to the CMS website to view Medicare remittance advice examples. Note: This resource will not be available after December 31, 2019.
We will reject claims you submit with the HICN, with a few exceptions and reject all eligibility transactions starting January 1, 2020.
