If You Don't Have It, Get It, Then Use It!

If you don't have your patient's Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) there are 3 ways you and your office staff can get the MBI.

  1. Ask your Medicare patients for their new card. If they haven't received it, give them the "Get Your New Medicare CardExternal PDF" handout or refer them to 1.800.633.4227.
  2. Use the myCGS secure MBI look-up tool. Refer to the myCGS User Manual, Chapter 9: MBI Look-up ToolPDF to learn more.
  3. Review your remittance advice. When you submit claims with a valid and active Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) your remittance advice will provide the patient's MBI. Refer to the CMS website to view Medicare remittance advice examplesExternal Website. Note: This resource will not be available after December 31, 2019.

We will reject claims you submit with the HICN, with a few exceptionsExternal Website and reject all eligibility transactions starting January 1, 2020.
