April is Alcohol Awareness Month and April 7th is National Alcohol Screening Day

April is Alcohol Awareness Month and April 7th has been designated National Alcohol Screening Day. Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance for people aged 65 and older. An estimated 38 million American adults drink too much. Excessive alcohol can lead to a multitude of chronic health problems including liver cirrhosis, oral cancers, throat cancer, cancers of the GI system, hypertension, depression, and other psychological disorders. However, only one in every six adults have talked to their health care provider about their drinking. Alcohol screening and brief counseling has been shown to assist your patients with reducing their alcohol consumption for those who misuse alcohol. All Medicare beneficiaries are eligible to receive alcohol screening. If the beneficiary screens positive, the beneficiary is also eligible for counseling. Talk to your patients about this Medicare benefit available to them.
