Medicare Remit Easy Print (MREP) and PC-Print Remittance Advice Remark Code (RARC) and Claim Adjustment Reason Code (CARC) Update

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 instruct health plans to be able to conduct standard electronic transactions adopted under HIPAA using valid standard codes. Medicare policy states that Claim Adjustment Reason Codes (CARCs) are required in the remittance advice and coordination of benefits transactions. Medicare policy further states that Remittance Advice Remark Codes (RARCs) are required in the remittance advice transaction.

On or after April 1, 2013, all Medicare Remit Easy Print (MREP) and PC-Print users must download the code update file to be used in conjunction with the current updated MREP/PC-Print software. Instructions for downloading and installing the MREP software and/or code update file can be found in the MREP User Guide on the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) website (https://www.cms.gov/Research-Statistics-Data-and-Systems/CMS-Information-Technology/AccesstoDataApplication/index.htmlExternal Website).

Instructions for downloading and installing the PC-Print software and/or code update file can be on the CGS website at http://www.cgsmedicare.com (then clicking on the appropriate Payer). In order for the codes to update, the most current version of MREP/PC-Print must be downloaded and installed. If you are already using the most current version of MREP or PC-Print you will only need to download the code update file.
