What to Do If the MBI Changes

For established patients and customers, it is always a good idea to check eligibility before submitting a claim to Medicare to ensure nothing has changed.

When checking eligibility using the myCGS portal or the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) and you receive error message "Invalid MBI", your patient's MBI may have changed. The MBI may be changed due to a beneficiary or authorized representative request, or CMS may initiate the change.

How to Obtain the Changed/New MBI:

There are only two ways to obtain the new or changed MBI after January 1, 2020:

If the beneficiary has not received their new Medicare card with the new MBI yet, they may obtain their new Medicare number by calling 1-800-Medicare or signing in to their mymedicare.gov account.

There is no need to worry about the information transferring from the old MBI to the new MBI, all of the beneficiary's information and claim data will be available under their current MBI. All data history is connected, and using the current MBI should always pull up all of your history when checking for eligibility, same or similar equipment, inpatient or skilled facility stays, etc. The new MBI may be used for claim submission of all dates of service.

Eligibility inquiries through myCGS or the IVR*:

*Suppliers using another system to submit and receive HIPAA compliant 270/271 eligibility request/response may be able to obtain the old MBI termination date if the inquiry uses the old MBI and request date or date range overlap the active period for the old MBI. Refer to the CMS HIPAA Eligibility Transaction System (HETS) web siteExternal Website for more information. The MBI Lookup Tool is only available through the MAC online portal.
